Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Painted Pottery Ox - Zodiac Animal
This rare and very unusual pottery model of a ox, one of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, was made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). It is "heavily-potted" and made from a dark grey pottery. The details have been individually sculpted and the surface "cold painted" in white pigment on top of which are red and black pigments to pick out the facial details. Although we have indeed in the past seen similar examples, this is an unusually large and detailed example.
Length 14.5 cm (5.75 inches). Although there are some chips and losses there is no repair or restoration - please study the detailed photos carefully.
For information: we recently purchased this, together with several other similar zodiac animals, from a private US collection, these apparently having been bought in the 1990s.
