Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Porcelain Dish - Hoi An Hoard (with book)
This attractive and sizeable dish was made during the mid 15th century, probably around the 1430's - 1440's. It is quite heavily-potted and well decorated with an attractive floral design inside the bowl and lotus leaf patterns on the outside wall. The glaze is finely crackled. One of the glaze crackles has penetrated the body at the rim, which is not unusual for such heavily-potted wares, but the dish still has a ring when tapped. The inside of the foot rim is coated in a wash, typical of many Vietnamese pieces of this period.
A good size with a diameter of 23 cm (9 inches). A fine hairline at the rim but no repairs or restoration; very good condition. A nice example of Asian ceramic history and part of a fascinating story (see below).
This dish was part of the cargo of a 15th century shipwreck that came to be known as the "Hoi An Hoard". With this dish comes a fascinating book, "Dragon Sea" by Frank Pope who was the archaeological manager of the salvage operation. This book really is a good read, not only revealing what really goes on in the world of underwater archaeology, but also reading as an exciting adventure story, all the more interesting because it is all true. Also touched on in this book are the Gerdermalsen, Diana, Tek Sing, Vung Tau and Belitung wrecks, as well as others.
The book is the first edition, brand new hardback with paper jacket published in 2007 by Penguin at a price of £18.99.
Much of the cargo of this wreck was sold in what turned out to be a disastrous sale hosted by Butterfields and eBay. This particular dish that we offer for sale was not part of that sale but was one of many dishes that found their way to the market prior to that sale (details of which can be read about in the book!).
