Tall Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Yangling "Stick" Figure

This tall and impressive pottery "Yangling" figure was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8), more specifically, the 2nd century BC. It is "heavily-potted" and made from a dense fine-grained pottery that has been "cold painted" with a pink/brown flesh-coloured pigment on top of which the facial features have been picked-out in black and red pigments. These figures were made in separate sections, head, body, legs. The parts were then luted together prior to firing and then cold painted after firing.

Various types of Yangling figures have been excavated, although none have arms; it is believed that such figures originally had wooden articulated arms that have, of course, long since rotted away.

This is a tall figure with a height of 59.5 cm (23.25 inches. Realistically there is most likely some repair and/or restoration, although any such repairs have clearly been performed to a professional standard.

Note: this figure is one of a group we bought some years ago, another of which we had TL tested by Oxford Authentication Ltd. and we show that TL analysis report purely for information. This particular figure has not been tested although that can be arranged for an additional fee.

This figure is available to view at our gallery.
