Large Chinese Warring States Pottery Jar (475 - 221 BC)

This attractively-shaped pottery jar was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is made from a fine-grained grey pottery. It has a slightly concave base and the lower body has lightly incised lines around it. Above this the surface is smooth and around the waist and shoulder, to the neck, are decorative burnished lines. Around the base of the neck is a shallow depression.

Diameter 28 cm (11 inches), height 23.75 cm (9.25 inches). Condition is very good; although there are surface stains and deposits from long burial, there is no sign of restoration or repair.
