Large Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Bowl - Heron & Ducks
This "Swatow" (or "Zhangzhou") blue & white porcelain bowl was made during the mid to late 16th century c.1550-1570. The central design is of a heron standing amongst aquatic plants; around the inner rim is a scrolling blue band. Surrounding the outer wall are ducks in a pond with various aquatic plants. The bowl is coated in a thick and finely-crackled glaze. Parts of the foot remain unglazed and have fired to a reddish-brown. There is some kiln grit around the foot, this being a common feature of Swatow ware.
Diameter 20.5 cm (8 inches). There is a firing fault to the rim, also two small chips. There is no repair or restoration.
