Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Bowl - Buddhist

This fine blue & white porcelain bowl was made during the late 15th - early 16th century. The underglaze blue decoration is of good colour. In the centre of the bowl is the double vajra (Buddhist sceptre) pattern, surrounded by a scrolling floral pattern and a trellis border. Surrounding the outer wall is an elaborate lotus flower scroll. It is thickly glazed and in places there are pieces of kiln grit embedded within the glaze.

Diameter 16.5 cm (6.5 inches). This bowl is in good condition although there is a short crack at the rim that appears to have been stabilised as this bowl retains a good ring when tapped.

For information: several very similar bowls were recovered from the "Lena Shoal" shipwreck that has been dated to c. 1490 - 1500.
