Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Jar - Machang
Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Jar - Machang

This pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. The outer surface and inner mouth have been decorated with geometric patterns using fired-on mineral-based pigments of two different colours. The inside of the mouth is discoloured by some kind of dark deposit; we do not know if this was caused during its firing or later during its long burial. On the inner surface are marks left by ancient root/plant growths.

Diameter 15 cm, height 12.5 cm. There is minor "nibbling" to the edge of the vulnerable mouth; no repair or restoration. A nice example in very good condition.
