Korean Silla Dynasty Stoneware Wine Bottle. 668-935 AD
A Rare Korean Silla Dynasty Stoneware Wine Bottle. 668-935 AD Ht. 7 1/2ins. (19.1 cms) Silla stoneware was usually unglazed, the glaze on this handsome piece was caused by flying ash in the kiln. Many Japanese kilns were strongly influenced by these ceramics with their fluent graffito patterns. We have attached photos of three pieces of similar age. The two black and white photos were taken from a rare early 20th. century Japanese book on Korean ceramics and show similar sgraffito patterns and a similar neck. The bottom colour picture is of a bottle in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The bottle has a Japanese gold lacquer repair to a chip on the lip but is otherwise un-damaged with no other repairs. Please note that the glaze on the lower part of the bottle looks like paint but is, in fact, ash glaze.
