| Pair Chinese Silver Inlaid Bronze Incense Burners. 17th. century Ht. 5 1/2 ins. (14 cms) Length 6 ins. (15.3 cms) The figures probably represent the celebrated Chinese philosopher Laozi (also spelt Laotse, Laotze etc.) He is often represented riding a buffalo in his mortal phase. The left hand piece in the picture below shows him reading a scroll and the right he is holding a scroll in one hand and a goad for the buffalo in the other. A close inspection of the photo will reveal that there is extensive silver inlay, most of which is oxidised and one or two minor pieces of inlay are missing. The bodies of the buffalo are also inlaid with patches of copper and silver foil. Condition is generally very good, there is the expected wear and signs of use and age such as bruises and "dings". Please inspect photos carefully. The scroll is loose in its sockets as it probably was originally as it is made separately. | ||
