Kashmir painting of Laxmi ca. 1950
A vintage painting of Laxmi on cardboard paper in gold and multi-colored pigments from Kashmir. Laxmi, consort of Vishnu and goddess of health and wealth, sits regally on a pink lotus flower, floating on blue-gray water and surrounded by pink lotus blossoms. She is dressed in a printed green and red sari with golden foliated edges. Her upper two hands hold pink lotus flowers, her lower right hand is in the gesture of giving and her lower left hand holds a gold plate, from which gold nuggets are flowing to another plate below; her right foot rests on a lotus petal. Her crown, jewelry and belt are of burnished and matte gold with gesso and enamel and colored glass insets. Laxmi is framed by a light gray scalloped arch with floral golden design. The painting itself measures 15 x 9.5 inches, plus a margin of 1.5 inches. The painting is in excellent condition; the juxtaposition of red, pink and glowing gold is just breathtaking.
