| Two Tibetan tsaklis on rice paper, circa the 19th century. The tsaklis depict the animal- and bird-headed fierce dakinis (goddesses) from the Bardo Thodol, popularly known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. These dakinis (called "Phramenma" and "Bangtruknyernga") are encountered by a deceased person during his 49-day journey between death and rebirth, and represent the negative elements of his mind; if he faces them without fear, his spiritual liberation is near. Each tsakli measures about 4x5 inches. The painted area itself is in very good condition; however, the right margin has nips (as can be seen on the pictures). | ||
