Rare Bagobo abaca tritik yellow tube skirt

A rare abaca (banana plant fiber) yellow tritik tube skirt, circa the 1950s, maybe much earlier, from the Bagobo (probably Manobo) people of south central Mindanao, Philippines. Comprised of two abaca cloth panels sewn together on the sides, the skirt has three highly stylized humans with upraised arms as main pattern, framed by rows of zigzags, lozenges, Xs and the bamboo shoot motifs. The pattern is repeated on the lower half and the other side of the skirt. These tritik white designs were created by over-sewing the abaca cloth in waxed thread before dyeing and removing the waxed thread after dyeing the cloth, thus leaving the white designs on the yellow naturally-dyed abaca cloth. Shades of red and maroon dyes are normally used; the yellow coloring as used in this abaca cloth is rare. The skirt measures 34 x 23 inches (or 46 inches around). Native small stitched repairs and small tears (some can be noticed on the pictures) indicate the skirt's active use.
