| Two similar Mandaya abaca (banana plant fiber) ikat cloth panels (locally called “dagmay”), still attached to each other, from the Mandaya people of eastern Mindanao Island, Philippines circa the 1970s. On each cloth panel is the quintessential Mandaya design of an anthropomorphic figure (locally called “tau” meaning human) and crocodile (called “buaya”). The abaca fibers were dyed most likely from natural plant colors, ranging from light to dark brown. Measuring about 70 x 28 inches per panel, the cloth is in over-all fair condition, with a few slits and tears about 3 to 4 inches long, notably towards the middle where the two panels join (not seen on the pictures). | ||
