Mandaya abaca ikat cloth two-panels #2
Two similar Mandaya abaca (banana plant fiber) ikat cloth panels (locally called “dagmay”), still attached to each other, from the Mandaya people of eastern Mindanao Island, Philippines circa the 1970s. On each cloth panel is the quintessential Mandaya design of an anthropomorphic figure (locally called “tau” meaning human) and crocodile (locally called “buaya”). The abaca fibers were dyed from natural plant colors and also commercial colors. Measuring about 62 x 30 inches per panel, this Mandaya ikat cloth is in very good to excellent condition.
