Kalinga cotton skirt with mother-of-pearl dangles
This is a circa 1950s Kalinga female cotton wrap-around skirt (locally called “kain”) from the Kalinga people of the Cordillera area in northern Luzon, Philippines. The “kain” is of probably hand-spun plain woven two-paneled cotton, with an embroidered yellow and green zigzag pattern running along the warp. Yellow, red and black supplementary weft twining enhance the warp ends. Cut mother-of-pearl triangles hang from tiny black strung glass beads. In very good condition, the wrap-around measures 52 x 26 inches, with no noticeable holes or tears, except for some unraveled stitching where the two panels are joined.
