Antique thangka of Protector Riding on a Black Horse
This is a very fine quality antique thangka of a Protector Riding on a Black Horse, circa the 18th century from Mongolia, using mineral pigments and gold on a pepared cotton ground. The three-eyed, dark colored Protector depicted on the thangka is a deity of the “nor lha” or wealth granting deity group. The Protector holds a dorje (vajra) in his right hand and a vase in his left hand from which gems are cascading. He wears a floral rich yellow robe and red overcoat with small yellow roundels. A green halo frames his head, with a wide-brimmed hat topped by a vajra-tip. His expression is fierce. Two adorants below, on the left, a monk, and on the right, a semi-naked layman, offer him gifts in supplication. In front is an offering of flowers, jewelry and corals, together with an offering of the senses, contained in a white skull cup. This antique thangka still has the top wood hanger and brown silk veil, with the bottom roller missing. It still smells of the yak butter used for lighting. The painting itself measures about 13 x 10 inches; including the black cotton surround, 29 x 15 inches (mid-portion). The thangka is in very good condition, with very little creasing and a very minute slit at the top left corner, almost non-noticeable.
