Antique Kota Agung palepai
An antique palepai from Kota Agung, Sumatra, Indonesia circa the early 1900s, made of variously colored cotton and silk and metal threads on cotton ground. The usual theme of the palepai is ships, which connote life’s passage through its important phases- birth, naming, circumcision, marriage and death. During ceremonial occasions, palepais are also displayed to indicate hierarchical or organizational structure. This palepai depicts a dark blue ship, carrying a shrine midship atop a stack of small ships, with two stylized tree of life on either side amid two stacked hat-like (horn-like?) designs. Below the big blue ship is a gathering of variously colored small ships, bearing human riders. This palepai measures 89 x 21 inches and is in very good condition, with some loss of threads, noticeably towards the middle section.
