Bagobo woman's ear-neck ornament with gold-capped plugs
A rare Bagobo (possibly Bilaan) woman’s ear and neck ornament ensemble from the Bagobo (Bilaan) people of south central Mindanao, Philippines circa the first half of the 1900s, most likely the early 1900s. The ensemble is comprised of two ear plugs, beads and cotton tassels, copper and braided human(?) hair chains, and mother-of-pearl and blue-green beetle forewing dangles. Each ear plug is capped with an inch in diameter of nine-carat gold thin metal sheet, the pattern being a central orb, probably representing the sun or a star, with two sets of concentric triangular rays. The motif on the plug's gold metal cap reminds me of central motifs on top of Dongson kettledrums. Decorating each plug are varicolored beads at the side and mother-of-pearl tiny platelets at the back. Hanging from each ear plug is a five-inch long design of multicolored beads and varicolored cotton thread tassels. Serving as the neck portion of the ensemble are six twelve-inch long chains of worked copper metals and braided human(?) black hair. When worn these chains fall in front of the neck below the chin. Tiny delicately-shaped mother-of-pearls are joined to each other to form dangles to the chains. Six forewings of the blue-green beetle function as pendant highlights. This ear-neck ensemble is in very good condition, with some possibly later replacement of portions of the metal chains and nipped ends of two beetle wings. A rare, gorgeous piece of tribal jewelry.
