Inlaid French Morez baker's wall clock CA 1860-90
Sometimes known as "picture frame" or "baker's clocks" these elegant scalloped wall clocks still show up for sale now and then chiefly because of their massively-durable Morez movements refuse to die. Decorated like French pastries, it isn't difficult to see why they were popular in bakeries and continue to be desirable today by anyone seeking that particular gallic look. The spring-windup movement runs eight days and strikes the hours and half hours with a gong. It repeats the hour strike at two minutes after the hour (supposedly a prayer interval?). The heavy wood case has a undulating frame of black-painted gesso over wood and an inner walnut veneered frame with extensive mother-of-pearl inlay in a floral motif. The dial is baked enamel over iron and hand painted roman numerals. The name of the clock seller "J. Etrillard" and the town where it was sold or made: "Pen_pol"? It comes with a winding key and a brass pendulum and is in good working order. The glass frame is hinged and lifts up for winding. Provided with instructions for hanging and adjusting. The clock measures 19"X24" by 6" deep and weighs about 20 lbs. Free pickup in Richmond, VA!
