French bronze model or dancer signed P. Philippe
Looking as if she were strutting on a Parisian runway this haut couture sculpture projects all the insouciance of a live one. His work bridges two important art periods, Nouveau and Deco, and this statue looks to be of the early later. Cast-signed in the base: "P. Philippe" for Paul Philippe, who was born in Berlin in 1870 and moved to Paris in 1900. He was well-known in French art circles particularly for his bronze statues of Russian dancers and stylized nudes. From 1902-1909 he exhibited in Paris at the Salon Societe des Artistes Francais. His work was exposed to the American art market through the Gorham Galleries in New York city. The sculpture on its original black marble base measures 14-1/2" tall and weighs about 15 lbs. The condition is excellent and the patina untouched. There is some minor rub at the exposed edges of the dress and slight scuffing on the marble. The felt on the bottom is quite worn and probably should be replaced. Shipped insured FedEx anywhere in continental US for $40.
