South African Kuba Cloth

South African Kuba Cloth

The Kuba kingdom is a multi ethnic group set in the central part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). Kuba textiles stand out from all others and the complexity of design and use of geometric shapes. Woven of palm leaf fiber, some are cut to form a pile-like surface while others use elaborate decorative designs. Only women are entrusted to turn simple raffia cloth into the velvet like plush panels. Dyed with natural vegetable dyes, decorative stitching and embellishment with cowrie shells are often used. Kuba is commonly used as a skirt worn by both men a women in everyday life and layered and draped for ceremonial occasions.
In non African homes, the cloth makes a stunning statement as a textural wall hanging, cushion cover and dining chair seat cover.
