Ardmore Ceramic Nguni Cow Tray

Ardmore ceramics is a collaborative labor of love and art in the Drakensburg Mountains of the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Begun by Zimbabwean born ceramic artist and teacher, Fee Halsted-Berning in the mid 1980's, the studio provides livlihood for many South Africans living near Ardmore Farm, often in abject poverty. Ever the teacher, Fee began working with the local Africans in a classic apprentice mode, allowing the emerging artists to capture in their pieces the light, color, and very essence that is South Africa. No two pieces are alike. All are hand- built and hand painted, often worked on by several sets of artistic hands. Painting of the pieces is usually done under some trees with sun beaming and children playing. And always laughter. Besides creating enchanting and naive pieces, the artists have succeeded in raising their standard of living through the steady income generated by their employment. Ardmore is recognized, celebrated, and coveted throughout South Africa, Europe, and the U.S. If you're lucky, you, too can be part of the fan club.
