A globular vase by TOKUDA Masahiko-Yasokichi III

A globular vase of Kutani porcelain, strikingly decorated w. green, purple and blue glazes in saiyu technique. Signed: Kutani Masahiko. Ca. 1980. H 16,5 cm, D 15,5 cm. Condition: Perfect. ( sorry for the quality of pictures; it is a difficult piece to photograph ). BIOGRAPHY: Tokuda Yasokichi III. Also known as Kutani Masahiko (b. 1933). A graduate from the Kanazawa school of arts. Started working with Kutani ware under the direction of his father Yasokichi II. Yasokichi was designated “Living National Treasure” in 1997, thus following in the tradition of his father and grand-father. He is known for his elegant yet powerful use of translucent Kutani glazes, usually five colours (gosai) in a new and modern technique where the glazes blend and overlap (saiyu) in a striking display of colours. Yasokichi’s works are now in many museums and private collections. His pieces may be signed differently. Sometimes simply “Masahiko,” “Yasokichi,” or “Kutani Masahiko.”
