Nice vase of the MASHIKO tradition of HAMADA SHOJI

A square and squat vase of stoneware with a small, square neck in the MASHIKO tradition of HAMADA SHOJI. Probably made by SHUSAN Ippu (b. 1932), one of Hamada’s early students. The body is decorated w. running glazes in dark brown, bluish green over the characteristic iron-brown glaze found on many ceramic works done in the Hamada tradition. Stencil technique has been used on those part of the body where the core material is visible through the transparent outer glaze.Made around 1975–80. H 19 cm, W 16 cm. Condition: Excellent.
