An interesting German stoneware Historicist baluster jug, applied with relief decoration of oval medallions and grotesque masks at the neck and around the body with the Biblical story of Susanna and the inscription DIT IS DIE SCHONE HEISTORIA VAN SUISANNA INT KORTE EIT GESCHNEIDEN 1584 E P E K. Height: 9 ¼ in. 2nd Half 19th century. Perfect condition.The jug is a pretty direct copy of a sixteenth-century Raeren jug of which one example, in the British Museum, is illustrated in Gaimster: German Stoneware 1200-1900 pl. 93. The relief decoration has evidently been moulded from an authentic specimen. The jug is in the late 19th century German Renaissance Revival taste. |
