A rare Goanese ivory figure base carved with the Magdalen reading in a niche flanked by leopards(?) and sheep. Traces of red, white, yellow and green pigment. Height: 4 in. ( 5 3/8 in. with base). 17th cent. The figure of Christ ( with a lamb on his shoulder ) is missing and there are a few other small chips. Comparable examples can be seen in Tardy Les Ivoires Vol 2. p. 230. and in Spink: Ivories of China and the East, fig. 257. |
