At the time of acquisition in 1968 the piece was said to have been in the fire when the Burmese conquered and burned Ayudhya in 1767. The bronze figure was acquired from a diplomat's collection in 1968/1971 who had owned it for some twenty years, and was in turn acquired from a Thai prince whose family had owned the piece for some time. Measurements: H 19".

Red sandstone carving, probably of a door post, showing Vishnu on his vehicle the Garuda. The piece, originating from what is today Thailand, dates from the time the Khmer empire extended into Thailand with its capital at Lopburi. Approximately 13th century. Excellent Burmese wood-carving of kneeling monk, embellished with mica and glass pieces. Traditionally, pieces like this one portrayed Buddha's favorite disciple Ananda. 19th Century. Difficult to find an antique monk in today's market. With Damage. Condition: Although the skirt has a surface crack, this does not detract from the aesthetics of the piece. Khmer stone fragment of Shiva on his mount Nandin, of gray sandstone. Dramatic profile. The provenance for this piece is an origin in Phanom Rung, which is now in Thailand but part of the Khmer Empire during the 10th to 13th century. Measurements: H 15 1/2", L 22". Teak base 3 1/4" x 16 1/2" x 10". Provenance: Private collection since 1968.
