|Fantastic and very rare design by Woolrich Maine Modernist, Clifford Russell, who produced 40's - 70's and is no longer alive. This self taught artisan found his inspiration in his surroundings. Nature. If you have been fortunate enough to see his work you will know what I mean when I say how uniquely untainted his craftsmanship was. Pure in form, rich in detail, and executed with astounding craftsmanship. He was totally uninterested in mass production as he felt it would restrain his imagination. An article in the Portland Maine Evening Express from 1968 states that he was an almost reticent man, seldom going anywhere except to visit a gallery or two. William Zorach, a sculptor and painter of note, once called Russell " the world's greatest silver arts craftsman" and "an artist with a special genius for duplicating nature in silver." For more than 10 years he was unable to keep ahead of inventory, with a line that was constantly at his small studio. His pieces are very hard to come by and these two I am listing, cuff and matching ring are absolutely wonderful. (I will include a copy of the article with purchase.) Cuff bracelet measures 6 1/2 " L add 1" for opening. Cuff measures 1" H and has 5 applied starfish going all the way a round within a background of waves. Fantastic sculptural quality! Signed inside cuff: STERLING, HAND MADE, RUSSELL. Excellent all original condition! A wonderful and very rare example of work by Clifford Russell of Maine!|
