The Koummya is a variant of the Jambiyya which Christopher Spring calls,"an essential element of the formal attire of every adult man in Arabia and Maghrib countries of North Africa". . Judging from both the unique ebony hilt as well as the clear wear resulting from age and use, our example was likely made in the second half of the 19th C for traditional wear and use. The ebony wood hilt, inlaid with metal and brass is both unique and attractive...

Acquired in Moscow in the early 1990's, this knife was represented to us as issue to the Tactical Soviet Air Force in the 1970's and early 80's. The wedge shape has both a chisel style cutting edge the length of the blade as well as across the squared end. The back of the blade bears a serial number...

A sturdy version, of the sword called Dao, widely used by Chinese troops in the 19th C. This example has a heaver, thicker blade than those usually found on this classic 19th C pattern. In a style that first appeared in the Ming Dynasty and continued until the end of the 19th Century this style of big sword is probably as close to a "military" sword as one gets when categorizing Chinese swords. Obviously made for the enlisted troop, this sturdy sword is crafted with little attention to fine finish The iron pommel circular guard and hard wood hilt are built to withstand hard use. The wide blade shows rough finish and was probably cleaned with sand. It none the less remains sharp...
