They seem to be assigned responsibility for various events or actions for which there is no immediate, obvious explanation. Crafted in ivory with small horns, fangs and unkept hair, the carver has captured the essence of the Oni. This is further accented by the use of, inset hornbill and ebony eyes. The cord fastening device shown on the back is somewhat manju like. Signed. Size 1.75" x 1". 1970's.

Collected in Japan in the 1970's this lacquer ware is more studio art than functional plate. While it could be used as a serving piece the striking and unusual form suggest that it is should be an art object, certainly it is both. Sitting on a six inch foot, the rolled rim dishes slightly into a cavetto and rises to a center peak, emphasized by the use of red and black. Showing slight abrasion from cleaning and use but no damage. 14.25" in diameter.
