A well sculpted rendition of Pu-Tai also known as Budai who was elevated on his death to the Maitreya Buddha or the Buddha of the Future. A good example of a hand made Chinese cloisonne jar. The classic enamel decoration is characteristic of the period found in the late 19th C thru the early 20th C. The pin holes in the enamel are also characteristic of this and earlier period, Close examination of the wire cells further reflect a hand made process. The interior counter enamel is light blue and has a rough finish further suggesting late 19th C construction. the lid is original to the jar. A large lacquered wood mask in the form of a demon with bulging eyes and the kangi for King in a red circle on its forehead. Probably a festival or theater mask. A dramatic mask from the late Qing Dynasty. May have had a lower jaw? Shows wear from use and age but is in good overall condition. Much of the original lacquer remains. There is some minor loss in the interior but it does not effect the integrity of the mask. late 19th to early 20thC. H:15", W:12.5".

Depicting a creature from Japanese folk lore variously translated as demons, devils or trolls. They seem to be assigned responsibility for various events or actions for which there is no immediate, obvious explanation. Crafted in ivory with small horns, fangs and unkept hair, the carver has captured the essence of the Oni. This is further accented by the use of, inset hornbill and ebony eyes. In excellent condition, an attractive Taisho Period c. 1925-1928, signed Satsuma and bearing the Shimazu family mon. The front depicts noble women with children while the reverse is painted with lush hanging flowers. The shoulders bear gold gilt dragon faces. A classic Satsuma vase. Height 5", diameter 2.75".

This large Demon face is very arresting. The carvers attention to detail in portraying the angry face with its open mouth and bulging eyes is an artistic accomplishment.
