CLARKE & CLARKE Art + Artifacts
|This dagger really represents the end of an era. Dress regulations for the Army and Air Force officers uniforms would change in 1958, making the wearing of dress daggers obsolete. In addition the Soviet state emblem, shown on the pommel band of this dagger, changed at the end of 1956, suggesting that what we see is the final use of parts already made. An interesting piece of history. The dagger is in very good condition. The double edged spear point blade shows only slight abrasion from in and out activity. The ricasso bears the date 58 and the makers mark and the obverse bears a serial number. The hilt bears the Soviet star on the pommel cap and, as mentioned the State seal on the pommel band. The hilt is a medium color yellow bakelite. The cross guard and other hilt fittings have a heavy gilt finish which is in excellent condition. The scabbard has brass fittings with a double ring suspension. The top fitting is embossed on one side with an image of the Kremlin and the obverse with the Soviet Star over a wreath, against a sunburst. The lower fitting is plain. The leather is in very good condition and reflects the usual modest wear from use. Over all length 13.5", blade 8.5".|
