Santo Domingo Pottery Dough Bowl by Rafaelita Aguilar

From the 1970's, this dough bowl appears to have been used rather than residing in a collection cabinet. The base bears the signature of Rafaelita Aguilar who is noted for crafting large pottery. Born in 1936 and learning pottery from her mother, she is said to harvest the clay on the Pueblo and to build her pots using the coil technique. She fires the pots outdoors in the traditional manner. Using natural pigments, the pot has a burnished black finish with a matt black diamond geometric design at the shoulder. The bottom, and lower jar show some lite abrasion from use as does the interior. No cracks, chips or damage. 13" in diameter, 9.5" in height. Native American.
