A Malita Chiefs or Priests Club, Solomon Islands

From an Arizona Estate, this club has very good quality chip or incise carving on both sides of the blade. The size and light weight suggest that it was, as Fergus Clunie suggests of certain Fijian clubs, made to be used during officiating events where the club was symbolic of authority. A light colored wood, with the pattern defined by lime and ash. Nice patina in the contact areas. Probably dates to the beginning of the 20th C. 21.75" in length, 3" in width.
