Antique Abyssinian type Shield

While this type of shield is often called Abyssinian, it is also widely used in Ethiopia. The everted rim dipping to a shallow channel and rising to dome is a very efficient design for deflecting spears and arrows. The motif designs of rings, dots and cross hatch in bands bands are typical for this type of shield and are muted with the effects of use and age. These shields often have a caring strap attached to the rim as evidenced by the two punched holes in this shield to which the strap would be fastened. In the center of the concave back the original, sturdy U shaped grip is well attached and shows nice, rich patina. An excellent example of this style of shield. 20" in diameter. C 1900
