Unusual Antique African Hide Shield

While the construction and decorative design suggests that this unusual shield may be from the southern Sudan, Somalia or even Ethiopia the shape and handle do not. The sturdy, cured hide, rolled rim and geometric designs are all reminiscent of the region yet the long, contoured oval is a shape we shave not previously encountered. The surface is very worn from use and age, obscuring much of the traditional design on the face and is dark from rubbing with oil or fat. The designs are apparent on the interior of the shield. There are two holes at the rim for mounting a carrying strap. The some what chicken foot handle is unique to us. None of our reference material reveals an answer, yet the shield is unique and undoubtedly has a history of use. Size 19" wide x 36" in length.
