Charles Bragg, American (1931- ) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Vaudeville parents. As a teenager, he went to New York's High School of Music and Art in Harlem. At 18, he ran away with his high school sweetheart. Before pursuing art, he worked as a cab driver, truck driver, stand-up comedian, and factory worker. He began his artistic career after finally settling in California.
Bragg's works satirize the nature of the society he views. He is one of America's "foremost social satire artists."
Bragg's works have been showcased in museums and exhibits around the world. He has had work commissioned by Playboy Magazine and PBS made a documentary about him. He has also published a book on his work. Among his many awards are the Gold Medal for the National Society of Illustrators and the Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York.
