Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) painting of Maple Sugaring - Gathering the Sap. Oil on canvas. Circa 1950s-60s. Size: 30 inches x 36 inches. Excellent condition. Thomas Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and painted in Cape Ann, Maine and then from 1943 in Vermont where he is known for his landscape paintings, and most especially for his winter scenes. He was friends with his contemporaries, John Carlson, Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, both in New York City. In this painting, a pair of draft horses is hauling a sledge and sap gathering tub towards the sugarbush, while evaporating steam hangs above the sugar house with a mountain in the background.
