Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) - A Vermont Winter - oil painting on canvas. Circa 1940s. Canvas size: 24 inches x 30 inches. Condition: nice condition but with repairs to two small tears and would benefit from a professional cleaning. Period frame. In this painting dappled afternoon sunlight falls on a mountainous path covered with newly fallen snow and lined with white birch trees, while in the valley below, a partially frozen river winds its way between purple mountains. Thomas Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and painted in Cape Ann, Massachusetts and then from 1943 in Vermont, where he is best known for his landscape paintings, and most especially for his winter views. He was friends with his contemporaries John Carlson, Aldro Hibbard and Emile Gruppe. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, both in New York City.
