Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) - Autumn Valley. Oil on artist board. Circa 1960's. Size: 16 inches x 20 inches. Signed lower right and bearing stamps from the Thomas R. Curtin Estate on the verso. In this painting, Curtin has captured a Vermont valley at the peak of its autumnal colors. Using impressionistic brushwork and a colorful palette, he draws the viewer's eye from the rocky pasture in the foreground, through the sugar maples, to the purple hills beyond. This painting is pictured in the catalog, 'The Splendor of the Simple: The Paintings of Thomas R. Curtin, 1899-1978' (Clarke Galleries, Inc., 1993). Thomas Curtin was born in Pittsfield, MA and painted in Cape Ann and then, from 1943, in Vermont, where he is known for his landscape paintings and, most especially, for his winter scenes. He was friends with his contemporaries John Carlson, Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, both in New York City. Condition: excellent and recently professionally cleaned. Offered in a simple, vintage gilt frame.
