He studied at Cooper Union and at the National Academy of Design in New York and exhibited widely at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Corcoran Gallery, Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute and at other fine galleries and institutions. He maintained a studio in Washington Square in NYC until 1945. He is best known for his realistic detailed still life and landscape etchings. Beginning in 1929, he spent part of each year in Manchester Depot, Vermont, where he loved to paint red barns and white birch trees. In this painting, he vividly depicts a typical Vermont red barn as viewed through a large, spreading maple tree, whose autumnal colored leaves are casting an intricate pattern of dappled light on the side of the barn, while in the distance are visible the rolling hills of Vermont.
