Harold von Schmidt (American, 1893-1982) painting for Saturday Evening Post magazine article. Oil on canvas. Size: 24 inches x 33 inches. Circa 1959. Signed in upper right. This painting was commissioned as an illustration for James Warner Bellah's story, 'Ordeal on Blood River,' which was published as part of the 4th installment of five, in the November 7, 1959 issue of 'The Saturday Evening Post,' page 43, together with the caption - "They heard a sentry's slow feet pacing his post in front of the guns." On the reverse of the canvas is the following inscription, " Part II, Manus(cript) Page 121, 'They were pinned to the ground, with the bore thundering up the narrows, the steamers started -- If they had started.'" This inscription must have been for a suggested caption to accompany the illustration that was ultimately altered for the actual magazine story. Von Schmidt contributed illustrations for 'Collier's Weekly', 'Cosmopolitan', 'Liberty', 'The Saturday Evening Post', and 'Sunset' magazine. This painting was acquired by the father of the present owner directly from 'The Saturday Evening Post'.
