Fahnestock was born in Harrisburg, PA. He became a landscape painter and studied in New York City under William Merritt Chase, Frank DuMond and Arthur Wesley Dow. He was elected a member of the Salmagundi Club and exhibited his paintings there. He later moved to Dorset, Vermont, where he captured the beauty of the surrounding countryside in his art.
