Whiting Ivory pattern preserve spoon in sterling silver
Preserve spoon in Whiting's rare Ivory pattern, #2888, with gilt sterling silver bowl and ivory handle with traces of original brown patination. This rare pattern was introduced in 1890 by the designer Charles Osborne, who also worked for Tiffany & Co. There were approximately 27 pieces fashioned in this line. The ivory stems were frequently carved and patinated with a brown stain on the lower portion of the handle. All of the pieces have fancy repousse decoration to the bowls, which were also gilded. Examples in this pattern are extremely scarce. Condition: very good with most of the original gilding to the bowl, and with one tiny break in the pierced design. No cracks to ivory. The handle retains some of the original brown patination and is joined with a pin to the silver bowl. No monogram. Size: 7 3/8 inches long. See article in "Silver Magazine," Jan./Feb. 2001.
