Rare Mask, Africa, R.D. Congo, Kumu Peoples
Face mask of rounded rectangular shape, with protruding large forehead, square pierced through eyes, thin long nose, square pierced through mouth showing teeth, short chin. Irregular holes around rim. Wood, beautiful semi-glossy patina. Eyes and mouth underlined with white pigments, the rest of the mask being coloured with a dark-brown pigment. Africa, R.D. Congo, Kumu Peoples. Height: 13" (32 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Erosion, old accidents on top and bottom, (no danger), otherwise very good condition. Note: the art of the Kumu (or Komo) tribes is little known. Masks such as this one was used by the "Nkunda" Secret Society, and reserved for diviners, for rituals related to initiation or commemoration of dead members. A rare piece.
