| Stupa relief fragment representing an important chapter of the life of Buddha. When he was still Prince Siddharta, he made four encounters: an old and weak man, a sick man near to death, a funeral, and last, a monk. These four encounters lead him to decide to abandon the life of a prince to search for a meaning to life and the sufferings that it implies. The present relief fragment represents the first encounter, with an old and weak man, sitting and holding a long staff, while Prince Siddharta is standing beside him. The scene takes place in the palace garden, as is evoked by the vegetation at the right of the relief, and a wall and pilaster on top. The fragment was carved in grey schist. Pakistan, Gandhara Region, 1st to 3rd century. Dimensions: height: 6" (15,5 cm), length: 5 6/8" (14,7 cm), depth: 2" (5 cm). Large chip on the left side, leaving only the outline of the old man figure, otherwise good condition. | ||||||||||||
