| Mask representing the smiling face of He Shang, with small forehead, long ears, large, open and pierced through eyes, flat nose, large, open and pierced through mouth, wide chin. Wood, with remnants of thin plaster and superimposed layers of paint or lacquer. China, early 19th century. Height: 8 6/8" (22,2 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of age and long use, three small holes on top of the forehead, chips on top of right ear, otherwise very good condition. NOTE: Among the characters of the traditional Nuo theater in China, He Shang is a Buddhist monk. | ||||||||||||
