Stone Relief, Gandhara, Ca. 1st C.
Small relief representing the birth of Buddha. The scene is carved under an architectural ceiling, and shows Maya, the Buddha's mother, standing and holding a tree branch with her right hand, the baby Buddha protruding from her right thigh and a bodhisattva catching the baby in his hands. The couple is assisted by two other characters. A pillar of typical Greek architecture is carved on the left. A hole is drilled through to allow attachment of the relief to a stupa wall. Grey schist, with traces of soil encrustations in some areas. Pakistan, Gandhara Region, circa 1st century. Dimensions: length: 6 1/2" (17 cm), height: 4 3/4" (12 cm). Obvious signs of great age, erosion, some chips, otherwise good condition. NOTE: this is a fine and moving example of the Graeco-Buddhist art that followed the installation of Greek settlements in the North West of ancient India by Alexander the Great in the 4th century B.C.
