Female Figure, Nigeria, Idoma Peoples
Large statue of a female sitting on a stool, typical head with open mouth showing teeth, thick angular neck, large pointed breasts, protruding abdomen with scarifications, stylized feet. Wood coloured with dark and white (the latter kaolin) pigments. Africa, Nigeria, Idoma Peoples, mid 20th century. Height: 24 1/2" (62 cm). Obvious signs of use and age, erosion and chips in some areas, otherwise good condition. Ex. old French collection. NOTE: in Nigeria, south of the Benoue river, Idoma peoples give a great importance to their ancestors. Resurrection of the dead is an important part of their religion. They worship spirits of nature, with the help of statues kept in special sanctuaries. The present figure is one of the statues they use, as it is supposed to represent a spirit of water and forest.
