| RAY SCHECHTER. Geometric string art composition, 19 7/8" high (maximum) x 20" wide (maximum), nylon thread and brads, a square shape, a circle partially formed in each outer corner of it and along each outer side, the interior of the square with a quantity of intersecting colored threads, the short nails anchoring the threads and placed at close (approximately 1/4") intervals. Signed lower right, on the black fabric backing. Housed in what is probably the artist's own steel-sided frame, glazed. Fine condition. Circa 1974. Taped on the frame's reverse, upon the brown paper backing there, is a long typed biography of the artist, noting her birthplace (Brooklyn), education, previous employment and the year she became an artist (1969), listing exhibitions and clients, including corporations which had commissioned logos or emblems from Schechter, and giving a statement of her principles: "Ray learned how to take mathematical formulas and translate them into geometric designs. The precision of the idea, the 'magic and mystery' of lines that appear curved but are in fact, absolutely straight, the possibilities of color and composition and the mathematical elegance of it, all were enough to send Ray searching and researching for exactly the right wood, the proper fabric covering, the perfect nails and the most sensuous nylon thread to make the sophisticated and elegant creations that you see sampled here." The artist's typeset name and logo (a reduced-format photograph of one of her compositions) head the sheet, her New York address at its foot. A penned note alongside this first person account reads, "Created in her 80th year by (Miss) Ray Schechter (1894 - )." | ||
